Music Genres...

'Pop’ – Popular music is aimed at a general audience rather than a niche market. Songs of this genre are often commercially recorded, simple love songs. An example of this is Miley Cyrus with songs like ‘he could be the one’. This song is also aimed at a younger audience.

‘Rock’
– Rock music entered the main stream in the 1960’s with band such as the Clash and the the Ramones arriving a decade or so later. Speedy tempos and loud guitars were popular as well as bondage pants and bin bags. More recent rock bands are Nickleback and Blink 182.

‘Indie’
– This came from individual, unsigned artists who weren’t commercial mainstream artists. Eventually, Indie has just become bands with a similar type of music or style. The Arctic Monkeys are often considered one of the biggest indie bands around.

‘Metal’ – A sub genre of heavy metal with a rather niche audience, including bands such as ACDC and Black Sabbath. Bands of this genre are not generally as mainstream and well known as pop music due to the smaller audience and the way they are promoted.

‘Electro’ – This is a more modern genre where electronic mixers and synthesizers are commonly used. Examples are up and coming bands like Flamboyant Bella and I Haunt Wizards though the main focus is on production rather than live performances.

With my magazine I would like to create a bridge between pop and indie as I feel their are magazines that cater for the individual genres but not one that covers both. I think this would be popular as they are both large areas of music with a wide audience rather than the niche market metal music attracts. As I have more experience with NME and Q magazine I imagine creating a magazine of this fussion genre would be simpler following the conventions of popular prints.
